About the Book

This book will appeal to a variety of firearms enthusiasts. Firstly, of course, are those who own or use double rifles. However, shooters with just an interest in double rifles (loads, ballistics and how they work) will also find this book invaluable.

In this Revised Third Edition, the load data section has been greatly expanded, giving load data for most nitro double rifle cartridges. The pressure tests have also been expanded and all chapters updated. The chapter on paradox guns now also includes information on how they perform as shotguns.

Secondly, shooters interested in loading large cartridges in both smokeless and black powder form will benefit from this reference. Those loading large British cartridges even for single shot or magazine rifles will find it of particular interest as well.

Thirdly, those interested in internal ballistics will find the pressure tests done at the Birmingham Proof House and the K ynamco factory particularly valuable.

Lastly, this reference book contains useful reference information. There are dimensional tables, lists of component suppliers, extracts from old cartridge catalogues, powder burning rate charts and club shooting events and rules.

About the author

The author, Graeme Wright is an airline pilot by profession, however, he has had a keen interest in double rifles since the late 1970’s. During this time he has owned and tested a wide variety of double rifles.

These rifles have ranged from the 600 Nitro down to the 240 Apex and cartridges in Nitro, Nitro for Black and Black Powder loadings. During the later years of the 1990’s, his employment was in the United Kingdom. This permitted research and pressure testing at places such as the Birmingham Proof House and the Kynamco factory.

When the Big Game Rifle Club was formed in Melbourn, Australia in 1983, the author was the founding secretary. One of the main aims of this club has been to foster an interest and awareness of classic firearms.

Over the years the Big Game Rifle Club has developed a wide variety of events serving to test shooters’ skill’ in both accuracy and speed.

Special events for the particular gun makers are also staged for example, the Holland and Holland shoot which is held each year. This Club is represented in nearly all Australian states and the United States of America, and has many contacts around the world.
